Karen Radford, Executive Leader, Calgary
A proud Canadian, a corporate activist and a community catalyst. Karen has served on the executive leadership teams of Enbridge and TELUS as well as the boards of the Alberta Children’s Foundation, Western Financial, Energir, the Women’s Leadership Foundation and Loblaw. She believes corporations are living breathing organisms; systems that can evolve to create communities where individuals can grow and thrive. Karen is a natural leader and was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40. She was inducted into the Women’s Executive Network Hall of Fame, voted Best Canadian Executive by the Stevie Awards for Women in Business, and named Woman of the Year by Canadian Women in Communications. Karen was also recognized by the YWCA Foundation as a Woman of Distinction for her community dedication in 2009.
Why are you taking part in this year’s Rescue in the Rockies?
As a quiet dreamer and active people watcher from New Brunswick, I understand the value of community and voice. Supporting STARS was an easy choice; they are a passionate and skilled team and we have a veritable need for their urgent care.
Rescue in the Rockies is a way to "shout out" to STARS and their supporters while also raising awareness and funds so we can save the lives of friends and colleagues in need. When you see a STARS helicopter in the sky - you feel grateful for the service and blessed to be well. It is a constant reminder that life can change on a dime.
How are you going to prepare for the challenge
To prepare for this trip I’m going to practice yelling from mountain tops and memorizing phone numbers (does anyone do that anymore?) so I can raise enough funds to get off that mountain.
What will be your indispensable piece of survival gear or good luck charm that you will bring with you on the mountain?
My good luck charm will be my cell phone contact list.
